LLW (Low Level Waste)
Transported to the Drigg Disposal site on the Cumbrian Coast for below surface disposal. Treated for volume reduction. Waste is packaged and cemented in steel containers and stacked in concrete-lined vaults or holes excavated into the ground.
A simple store for LLW is used at UKAEA, Dounreay (pictured left).
ILW (Intermediate Level Waste)
Stored on site at reactors and at BNFL's Sellafield site
Nirex consulting and consensus building
HLW (High Level Waste)
Stored at Sellafield. Fifty year cooling down period as most highly active radionuclides decay away.
