Radioactive waste
Types of radioactive waste - HLW
High Level Waste - heat generating waste
- HLW has the greatest concentration of radioactivity, and generates substantial quantities of heat
- HLW is produced in relatively small volumes as a liquid residue from the reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel.
- No HLW is produced from decommissioning.
- High shielding requirement; stored in large tanks of water
- Immobilised in glass (vitrification).
