Radioactive waste

Types of radioactive waste - HLW

High Level Waste - heat generating waste

  • HLW has the greatest concentration of radioactivity, and generates substantial quantities of heat
  • HLW is produced in relatively small volumes as a liquid residue from the reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel.
  • No HLW is produced from decommissioning.
  • High shielding requirement; stored in large tanks of water
  • Immobilised in glass (vitrification).
