Getting ready for DIVERSE 2005.

Mark Childs discussed the latest preparations for the 5th DIVERSE conference
University of Warwick, UK

Mike: So only a month to go to the conference - how is everything coming along?

Mark: Pretty well. We've got an excellent range of papers and Lori's signed up some very interesting keynote speakers, which I'm sure she'll tell you more about in her bit.

Mike: What kind of range?

Mark: OK - we have 36 papers - and they include video in the classroom, video streaming videoconferencing, using mobile phones for learning, using virtual reality, CD-ROMs. We have seminars, workshops, demonstrations as well as the presentations. The subjects covered include teaching video editing, teaching Shakespeare, English as a second language, counselling skills, tutoring in-service teachers. And we've got presenters from the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Portugal, France, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Norway, the UK and, of course, the USA. It really is diverse.

Mike: Any paper in particular you'd like to mention?

Mark: Well, I suppose working and living in the UK Midlands I feel some sort of proprietarial connection with the Shakespeare paper. It's tough to make a choice … they're all so interesting. I'm going to learn so much from this conference. If I had to pick one, I'd have to say Katrina Townes-Young's presentation on linking schools with NASA research. I mean, it's NASA, come on.

Mike: How are the registrations coming along?

Mark: It's roughly on schedule. There are still a few vacancies, so anyone reading this who hasn't registered, or knows someone who would like to attend - there's still time. We've also got a half-day registration of £45 or $90 for anyone who wants to watch via videoconferencing. Lori's also getting together a video of all of the presentations, so anyone who registers will get one of those free. We're trying to make the conference as accessible as possible.

Mike: Anything else you'd like to add?

Mark: Yes! That Lori and her team have done an amazing amount of work on this. To be honest, all I've done is a bit of promotional work, oh - and editing down the abstracts to a page apiece for the conference proceedings (so it's my fault if it's been done badly). Everything else, the programme, the website, the planning, the registration, is the work of the Vanderbilt crew. Kudos to them.
